An Isotonic Drink is a beverage that contains electrolytes (important ionized minerals) such as Sodium Chloride, Calcium Lactate, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium, Phosphate etc, which helps a person’s body to replenish lost bodily fluid effectively.

When we sweat, we not only lose water but also these essential minerals as well, which if not replaced, can affect a person negatively. Symptoms may include dizziness, muscle cramping, a lack of energy and general tiredness etc. When you exercise heavily or involve in any intense physical activity, the amount of sweat a person loses is doubled or even tripled compared to normal circumstances.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that is required daily to perform a number of key functions in order to keep a person’s body operating efficiently. It is normally found naturally in foods like fruits and vegetables, and is also added to certain foods and beverages to enhance their nutritional value.

As Vitamin C is not produced by the body, it needs to be consumed from external sources on a daily basis. The key functions of Vitamin C include the following:

  • To maintain the normal functions of cells and organs.
  • To help the formation of collagen
  • To help protect against damage by free radicals in the body.
  • To help reduce tiredness and fatigue.
  • To help strengthen the immune system by ensuring regular production of white blood cells
  • To counter balancing a poor diet
  • To reduce damage of social activities such as smoking and alcohol consumption

During any form of physical activities, or in an enclosed air-conditioned environment etc, we lose more than just water through our skins. Along with it, we also lose minerals such as Sodium Chloride, Calcium Lactate, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium, Phosphate etc that help a person’s body to function effectively.

Therefore, water alone is simply inadequate when proper rehydration is required.

Mild dehydration is the most common causes of daytime fatigue among general adults around the world. Proper hydration enhances healthy blood flow, proper kidney function, proper electrolyte balance and proper digestive functions in our bodies.

Hydration and Exercise

Many people are unaware how the consumption of liquids affects performance when they are taking part in exercise. Even being slightly dehydrated can cause poor performance, and it is often overlooked.

Improper hydration can result in muscle cramping, decreased strength, dizziness and reduced endurance, severely impeding athletic performance, as well slower recovery afterwards.

By the time you are thirsty, your body is already dehydrated (when you lose more fluid then you drink). Once dehydrated, endurance is diminished, strength can drop, and the effect could last for up to several days. Instead of relying on signals from your body, drinking an isotonic drink at regular intervals before, during and after (regardless if you are thirsty or not) any physical activity will enable optimal protection and prevention from the effects of dehydration.

During any forms of daily activities and situations, the essential minerals and immune system in a person’s body drop together with losing bodily fluids. A replenishment drink, such as YOU.C1000 Isotonic Drink, that is rich in electrolyte and vitamin C will not only rehydrate the person’s body by restoring lost fluids more efficiently but also protect the body by strengthening the immune system.

Water is enough if you are doing very light exercises such as walking, but if you are doing moderate to high intensive exercises or outdoor activities such as running, playing team sports, hiking etc, then an isotonic drink is required to keep you properly hydrated. This is because the minerals that the body loses through sweating needs to be replaced, and water is unable to accomplish this task.

Isotonic drinks are scientifically formulated with the right amount of carbohydrates (sugar) and electrolytes to rapidly replace lost fluids through sweating, and to provide energy for peak performance.

Carbohydrate energy or sugar is the primary fuel that our brains and muscles use to keep functioning. The sugar in isotonic drinks not only provides energy for working muscles but it also assists in the absorption of fluid for quick and better rehydration.

Obesity is caused mainly by a person that consumes more calories than they are using, and not by what they eat or drink specifically. The amount of carbohydrate (calories) in an isotonic drink is formulated to offer hydration and fuel during exercise or physical activity, when the body needs and can use up those calories. The carbohydrate energy in isotonic drinks is quickly used up by active muscles, making it easier to continue exercising at high intensities – a key to burning calories.

There is no evidence from various studies conducted that have found a direct relationship between the consumption of isotonic drinks and dental erosion. What was found is that, maintaining the body’s hydration status actually increases saliva production, which may help prevent dental issues.

Almost all foods or beverages left settling in the teeth have some potential for promoting tooth damage. There is no reason to single out certain foods or beverages to avoid. However, it is highly recommended that proper dental care be practiced, including regular brushing, visits to the dentist, and use of mouth guards where applicable during sports.

Your body may lose water through the skin by perspiration, lungs by breathing out water vapor, kidneys by urine and the intestines through bowel movements etc. Both active and non-active people sometimes do an inadequate job of keeping themselves hydrated. Electrolytes, particularly sodium are essential for proper hydration, helping to maintain the balance of electrolytes and assisting the body to hold on to the fluid it needs.

Isotonic drinks are a fluid replacement beverage for use when people are hot, sweating and thirsty. Many energy drinks contains caffeine and 3 to 4 times more carbohydrate or sugar than an isotonic drink, as well as other substances such as taurine etc. As a result, these energy drinks slow down fluid absorption, and should not be used in situations where quick replacement of fluid, carbohydrates and electrolytes is important, e.g. during exercise.
